Appendix #12: New-York's Ethnic Composition for 1700-1730
Joyce D. Goodfriend Before The Melting Pot (Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press, 1992) pages 62 and 156-157. This data has several qualifications as noted in Goodfriend. Generally an analysis of surnames in the 1703 census and tax roles determined the ethnic identity as displayed below. In 1700 the Dutch category included Germans and other miscellaneous immigrants. In 1731 the English category included all British immigrants, e.g., Scots and Irish.
